As some others said, you were allowed to use performance enhancing drugs. There is a belief Pythagoras (of the triangle fame) won his boxing events by being in a drug induced rage.
Another is the use of time keeping.

1 - Winners were given an olive branch as an award. This was received with great honor within Greece in particular their town. Victors were virtually worshipped and given many gifts.
2- Women were not allowed to compete but only observe. Women risk death if they if done so.

the main difference would be the ancient Olympians wouldn't be able to compete against todays elite athletes because thier all dead and have been for a very long time.
