My 9month old daughter gets really cute and excited when I or anyone else pays visual attention to her. Can this be harmful to her self esteem later in life when she won't be 'as cute'? Is this normal for a baby to really enjoy visual affection? Any suggestions if you do think it will cause problems for her later in life?

My 9 mth old son is the same! He "puts on a show" everytime people are around him. If something that he does makes someone laugh he will do it over and over again for the same attention and reaction. I think it is perfectly normal, all the books I've read also say it's normal. Babies are learning social skills and just love people to help them use them!

Every baby has their own personality. Some are more extroverted and receive great pleasure in interacting with other people. Some babies are more shy and like to take their time developing a relationship with others, especially strangers. I have 4 children who are 27, 25, 22, and 9. My 22 year old was a darling baby with big blue eyes, blond curly hair and the cutest dimple in her check. She was very people oriented and carried on conversations with everyone she saw even before she really had any words. She has grown into a very normal adult, still more people oriented than the other 3, with little problems to her self esteem.

It is perfectly normal that your nine month old gets excited when anyone pays visual attention to her. Your daughter sounds very alert and aware of all that is going on around her and hence you have a very bright child on your hands. Your daughter is learning how to interact and engage with people around her. Your daughters self esteem will not be jeopardised in any way by the above mentioned.

I am pretty sure it is normal. My 9 month old son LOVES attention. I don't think it will hurt self-esteem, if anything they are more comfortable with themselves and seem to be more outgoing which will help rather than hinder later in life.

it's normal. she won't remember the attention that she gets now later in life. let her soak it up since she so clearly enjoys it
