I think it was towards ensuring security of sex through fixed companion...... gave birth to family and well defined and looked after children.... but for this no major further advancement could have been possible since this one step ensured the integrity and quality of the generations to come!!
We are now moving away from this and the erosion of family values must be arrested soon to save our souls, so to say!!!

our ancestors never bothered much about food clothing and shelter. They had great thirst for knowledge and they went on doing research and found many truths and advised people to live a life obeying the natural laws. They were strong, healthy and lived long.I had been to Udaipur palace where there is a museum and sword of old is one of the displays. I found that they used swords weighing 20 to 30 kg and could lift it with one hand and fight too. Today you will require 3 men to lift one sword of that type. So bad habits has reduced man to a puny individual.

After the basics, our ancestors discovered weapons, stone flint ect, with these became the power to defeat their neighbours thus relying less on hunting and gathering because of the gained booty. With the extra time came time to think and invent making life easier. once metallurgy was discovered ( copper) that defeated stone ie: harder and more deadlier weapons. Then came bronze (copper and tin) and finally iron. With neighbours joining and forming larger tribes and kingdoms, bartering, wealth and money became the norm thus forming nations and borders.

When individuals evolve into higher or deeper levels of awareness, civilisation takes shape by itself.
The reverse process happened when people got 'entangled' in commercialised thought process.... that is all.
About 100 years ago, the high percentage of thought content constituted non-commercial thoughts... And, thoughts shape the future and everything else !

the plow. the plow started everything. it was the first insturment used by man to shape his environment around his own needs. that allowed the first sirplus of foods like grain, which led to bartar. you gotta have something to put the wheat you just harvested so you make pots, then you make a LOT of pots. you gotta know what's in the pots and who they belong to, so writing was invented. ect.

Once we had that, we gained greed for more food, clothes, shelter. So the next step was simple: war.
