There is a significant weight difference, so they're easy to tell apart, however if they both have pacifiers in their mouths, they look VERY similar.

Same hair color, same blood type.

What other features can you look at to know whether they're fraternal or identical?

Is there a simple, inexpensive medical test that can be performed to find out definitivly?

Early ultrasound docs guessed they were fraternal. Nursury nurses thought they were identical. Separate sacs (this can go either way). I understand that fingerprints are unique among identical twins.

....and please don't give me the "if they don't look alike they're fraternal" line. If it were that obvious, I wouldn't be asking this question. Thanks

If the babies share a sack, they're identical, however identical twins can each have a sac if the egg divides within the first 5 days.

2 placentas....same as above.

I have twin boys, fraternal. I was told that there are 2 ways to find out, early ultrasound, before 16 weeks and a blood test. Identical twins are the same egg, but can have two sacs. I would go with what the doctor told you during the ultrasound. I had a early ultrasound and the doctor told me that they were fraternal. My boys are 5 pounds difference in weight and have different hair and eye color.
Your doctor could probably tell you about the blood test and what needs to be done.
Good luck!

I would say they are fraternal if that's what the doctors said at the ultrasound. Most of the time if they are fraternal there is two placentas. I know you said that the sacs can seperate and still be identical, but I know that is rare. Fraternal twins can look identical. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen are actually fraternal twins.

2 placentas would DEFINITELY be fraternal twins. Yes, identicals can be in the same sac or each have their own. But two placentas certainly means fraternal twins.

Side note: Mary Kate and Ashley Olson are actually fraternal twins. They just REALLY look alike...

Its a bit late now, but on your medical notes it would have described the amnions and chorions. 1 chorion they are definitely identical, 2 chorions and they are not. You can buy a simple test for around £30. Have a look at www.tamba.co.uk. There magazine has loads of ads for suppliers.

I thought identical twins would be in one sac. It's one egg divided.
The other way is two separate babies...two sacs.

Have you looked it up at wikipedia.org or google.com?
