There are plenty of internet sites offering to do this

But they are caeful not to expressly offer to copy copyrighted material. it is a legal grey area. you are 'permitted' to copy your own tapes/CD's for you own use as long as you retain the original material - though this is not strictly 'legal'
A third party could get into trouble for offering a paid service as they do not own the copyright, but are intending to make money.

I am quite sure it is legal as their own the tape. You are not copying it and selling to others, so it shouldn't be going against the laws.
