Well, the word 'EARTH' had to have some ancient resource, as most words stem from an ancient background, be it a romance, arabic, dutch, whatever, so the word 'earth' that we use to describe the ground possibly stemmed from some other word, be it latin, greek, or whatever from ancient times. I forgot what website goes in death with the history of words, but i'm pretty sure if you google the history of the word 'earth' it'll give you it's reference and what it was probably called back in the day.

the ancient word is terra, but the name was translated in different languages: earth, erde, ziemia, jorden, pamant... etc. Latin languages use terra (tierra, terre...)
