Because it presents a concept of Jesus (as a husband and father) which is not generally accepted (in a nutshell).

It is about the "Holy Grail" (the cup used by Jesus and the disciples in sharing the wine that represented the "blood of Christ" in the Last Supper). Many Christian archaeologists and historians had been searching for the Holy Grail for so many centuries, but its whereabouts are still unknown. Now, this is where the controversy arised. The book Da Vinci code claimed that the Holy Grail is not the cup described above. Instead, it says that the Holy Grail is actually the womb of Mary Magdalene that carried the child of Jesus (blood of Jesus). It claimed that Mary Magdalene had a special relationship with Jesus, a sort of man-and-wife relationship. After Jesus' death, the Romans started the wide-scale persecution of Jesus' followers, and many fled. Mary Magdalene was given sanctuary by many followers, and was secretly given haven from one place to another to protect her and the baby in her womb. Mary Magdalene eventually ended up in France. And the story went on.
That was the main controversy. In addition, another controversy arised when the book claimed that Mary Magdalene was one of the apostles (that there were actually 13 apostles, not 12). The recent discovery of the "Dead Sea Scrolls" that contained gnostic writings that included the so-called "Gospel of Judas Iscariot" and "Gospel of Mary Magdalene" purportedly supported the belief that Mary Magdalene is also an apostle. The early Christian church was said to be "male-chauvinistic", that the idea of Jesus having a female apostle is unacceptable, and therefore it rejected the role of Mary Magdalene as an apostle. Thus today, all Cristians were accustomed to the belief that there were 12 apostles.
You've got to read the book. It is a very fascinating read. It will make you pause and think whether what the Christian religion had taught you all along since childhood is that all correct. That is, if you keep a clearly open mind about the matter, without necessarily thinking that it will make you lose faith on what you believe. Religion had always been a very sensitive and delicate issue. Different beliefs had even led to wars.

Da Vinci Code is an amazing thriller.
It is all about cryptology. How a cryptologist finds a code in Da Vinci's paintings and find out it's meaning. This code is about Jesus Christ. Everyone knows that Christ neither had a girlfriend nor a wife. But this code or Da Vinci's Paintings said that Jesus was married to Mary Magdalene and that they had 2 children....
The Church obviosly objected to this theory. That's why the movie "Da Vinci Code" was banned in some countries like China, etc..
It's an excellent book. Must read

It claims to have a historical basis yet was written as fiction, many would say because that's the only way the theory could be published. Any time you have a full-out attack on another person's beliefs, especially with faulty evidence on Scriptures heavily backed by archeology, manuscript evidence, and internal/external proofs, you're going to get controversy.
Brown, at the beginning of his book, claims "all descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate." However, there are many faulty mistakes made, some outright stupid, within the book.

bc, the christians of the world think the storyline is blasting their beliefs, and some of the theories could be true, which flies in the face of what the bible says. look at all the violence in the world today, and through out history, 90% of it was caused by feuding religions. Also religion as ALWAYS persecuted science, look at galieo, capericus they where condemed for saying the sun was the center of the solar system and not earth, which the bible said it was.Capernicus was even put to death.(The vatican in 1960's finally said"maybe we were wrong to have put him to death" MAYBE !?!?!?!?) also the person who proved the world was round, and the person who discoved eletricity were viewed as witches or demons of the devil. Sorry for the rant.

It depicts the Christian's "Son of God" (ie Jesus) in less than favorable light with some of its theories. However, it's clearly stated by the author it is fiction which is even being taken for slanderous nowadays. The church made a huge fuss over it calling it a bunch of names, which made people want to read it even more to find out what got them so angry, which made the church even angrier in turn.

It is the birth-right of human to make contraversies. It is the natural when peace is everywhere, someone raise a challenge for war and when the war becomes critical, people raise slogans for peace. When there is a candle-stick burning, there would be a person who to light-off it and another to light-up it. Thus the human life on earth is going on.

Many people forget that Jesus was born of a mortal mother, and so was both the Son of God and the Son of Man in one. They don't want to accept that the Son of God could also have followed mortal traditions and married and possibly had children. They forget that religion is based on faith, not physical fact. It's his teachings we should follow, not whether he had a mortal personal life.
