rated are the movies that are sent to the rating company. unrated arent. Some previews for movies that havent come out yet say not yet rated, because they havent been. Unrated is just a different version of the same movie with slight differences to big difference that they didnt want to get rated like maybe a directors cut. Unrated doesnt necessarily mean, more nudity, violence, language.
Usually unrated dvds have both the rated and unrated versions and unrated usually has more stuff.

I have baught lots of unrated and rated movies and most of the time I dont notice a difference in the film... but some times you will get the option to watch the movie with alternate endings wich would be unrated do to it not being in the theatrical release which means there is unrated materal (Violence, Nudity, Language...) things of that source.

unrated movies have added scenes it does not necessarily mean that you will see more nudity, blood or cussing, it just means that it has not been rated by the MPAA which usually assigns the movie a rating so that it can be released at theaters. go for the unrated version because it has all of the content of the original plus the added scenes, plus most of the time it comes with both versions.

a rated movie tells you what you are getting into - and what the audience should be
an unrated movie could be anything from a 1940 black and white that our parents saw - where they kissed once - (ohhhh!)
to a 2002 directors cut that has the 30 seconds missing to make it a "strong R" put back in- so is it now an NC-17???
nah - we'll just call it unrated

Not a whole lot. "Unrated" means that version contains footage (which usually doesn't amount to much) that was cut before the film was giving it's final, official rating. Occasionally, you get something that really stands out, but usually it's an extra 30 seconds of nothing.

they put in deleted scenes not shown in theaters"nudity" so the movie will rent better on DVD, just a advertising ploy to make you think your seeing a different movie
you notice the unrated movies are the american pie types and not
war movies or dramas

If it is rated, it was reviewed and given a rating, G, PG, PG-13, NC-17, R or X.
If it is unrated, it was not reviewed and may contain objectionable material--but it does not always mean it will contain it. It just has not been reviewed.

It means they didn't rate it at all.
I think rated is better because at least you have an idea what kind of movie it is.
