I have a real-life one!
By the way, you should see The Electric Horseman, Unforgiven, Outlaw Josey Wales, and Tombstone if you haven't already. AWESOME movies. :)

I would give up on the dish wand system. Sponges are notorious bacteria traps, as you have found. You can try various ways of killing those germs, but they can really hide in the holes inside the sponges. We wash dishes by hand too, using a double sink. I pile the dirty dishes (except the glassware) in one side, and run hot water and enough dish detergent in the other side. You could also use a dishpan or even a large pot. To clean the dishes, I have two stiff brushes with plastic bristles. One has a long handle that will get into deep glasses. The other is short and stubby, and does a good job with stuck-on food. I also use a regular dishcloth for the rims of glasses and cups, and for items that aren't too dirty (saucers and unused silverware). The stubby brush is good for getting between the tines of forks. As I go along, I use hot water to rinse over the pile of dirty dishes, which softens up food particles and begins to rinse them away. That way they're not so sticky when I come to wash them. I wash glassware first, then chinaware, then silverware, then cooking tools, and finally pots and pans. Sometimes it's necessary to add more hot water to the dishpan, or start over with clean dishwater along the way. Bottom line: Switch to dish cloths, which can be dried and put in the laundry every day or two, and plastic-bristled brushes, which you can rinse off after the dishes are done. If you're worried about getting "dishpan hands", try Dawn Ultra. I find it's easier on my hands than Palmolive, and still does an excellent job. Then apply a bit of hand lotion to the sides of your fingertips.

Yes. I can't remember seeing a really good cowboy movie and I do like the classics, especially Shane and anything with John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.
