How can I tell if a car is in good shape as far as it's running well without starting the car?

I am going to an auto auction and need to know how can i tell if a car is running good or in good shape without starting it up, because we dont get to test drive the car at the auto auction?

Get a CARFAX report on the car. It might cost you 20 bucks, but if you're buying a car it would be well worth it. Have you heard of "Katrina cars"? They have lots of electrical problems from salty water getting in them. All you need is the Vehicle Identification Number and 20 bucks. Go online. (oh, all right, you already are)

You CAN'T, buying a used car is a crap shoot at an auction, A car should ALWAYS be put up on a lift and inspected by a mechanic.

Look at its General appearance. Is it clean? Does it appear to be in good order? Check the color of the Oil. Can you see through it when its on your finger? and the condition of the Antifreeze. If you can, Remove the plug or two and look for a relatively clean burn on the tip of the plug. Not Sooty Black or White. If you can take a flashlight and look in the tail pipe for a thin Gray/Black coat of soot.

You cant. All you can rely upon is a Carfax report or similar. Be prepared to replace the engine if necessary.

just look for tell tale signs, ie seat conditions, look at the pedals and see how worn they are! chips to the front bonnet will indicate lots of motorway travelling. - just basic common sense really!
