I have a freshly built computer. All new components. XP Home Edition. When I click on "turn off" XP shuts down like normal and the monitor shuts off like normal. All the fans contine to run. There's power to the CD/DVD. The on/off button is then useless. There is an on/off switch on the back I have to use. I have to turn it off then on before the on button in front works again. HELPPPP I've searched the net. Other people have complained about this. I can't find anybody with a solution.

The front switch may have a short in it. But why when WinXP shuts the system down, the thing doesn't shut off puzzles me. That is a type of electronic shutdown. I almost want to say that I would suspect the power supply or mobo. Somehow power is bypassing the off/on switch and suppling constant power to the optical drives. Start with the switch, and then try changing the supply. Leave the mobo till last.

When I built my system, I had an onboard network card and a linksys usb one. I had to disable the onboard network card in order for my computer to shutdown. What motherboard brand do you have?
