Yes, when mercury was in use in the 19th century various displays of floating iron in it were shown at scientific lectures. They used it for everything, glass was floated on it to make flat panes, hat makers brushed it into the felt of top hats to make them shiny etc. Nobody knew how lethal the stuff was although it was known that hatters, hat makers, often had mental health problems, hence the phrase 'mad as a hatter' due to mercury oxides building up in the brain.

I work as a haz mat tech and when we clean up five or ten pounds of mercury, it's always fun to float nuts and bolts in it. I have also seen a 2 lb. sledge hammer float. I should take video...that's a good idea.
