good question aisha.. they hate us(turks) because we are ıntruders.. yes.. we have taken over all of their land.. in time..
turks were escaping from china, mogolisthan ,and from other barbarians.. at that time our people were under pressure..
and a new land must founded.. so my ancestors went to west..
to anatolian land , where konstantinopolis(nowadays greeks)'s land.. but greeks were moving so bad to their people that, nobody wanted to stay in anatolia..
and then my ancestors escape to there.. after turks found that new land..,,they wanted it to be themselves.. anyway no one was happy in anatolia.. so,anatolian land was weak.. and it was really easy to capture.. after turks discovered this new land, konstantinapolis became angry.. . so they called papa..(ı dont like any papa!!) and papa prepared an army over to the turks..
the crusaders army went to anatolia to erase turks.. because turks were a serious problem for christians.. turks were müslim..
so turks wanted help from your ancestors aisha.. müslims helped müslims.. and crusaders were defeated.. many much war happened in anatolia.. but turks won them all... and turks protected the holy land.. umre.. so all the müslüms liked turkey so much.. anatolians land is our anymore.. greeks so dont like (hate) us.. because we have taken all of their land.. and if we were not in history page..,, müslims holy land umre would be in christians hand.. and probably there would be no müslim...
so aisha.. if ı were greek..ı would also hate turks.. because turks are really stronger my sister.. with the power of allah..
allahu ekber ;)

Excuse me, but why do you take for granted that we hate Turks and not that Turks hate us?
It is a very long story, like the hatred between the English and the French, the Japanese and the Chinese, the African tribes and all countries sharing the same border.
There is always some suspicion about each other, but now we are in a good state of communication and old stories seem to have been set aside -not forgotten. Both countries have to look forward to an optimistic future despite the fact that there are many differences; however there are also many similarities maybe more than differences, so why bother?
Have you also asked the Turks the same question?

We don't hate the Turks, but we have been trough a lot from Turkish policy throughout History. It all started in 1071, when the Greek areas (Greek form antiquity, over 1600 years) of Asia Minor were occupied by Turks. Then, in 1453, all the rest of Greece was also occupied, until 1829, when southern Greece was liberated (after a war of independence, that was between Greeks and Turks, well that didn't exactly cause feelings of love). But the areas of Asia Minor remained under Turkish rule. After WW1, Greece was supposed, as being among the winners, to take back those areas. Unfortunately, the Greek army who went over there got greedy and decided to get more areas that had greek population. Of course, the Turks fought us, and won, but they were very cruel and slaughtered many Greeks and about a million had to come to Greece as refugees. And this was not the greek army, but the greek population who had lived there peacefully for 2500 years. A treaty arranged for soem Greeks to remain there and some Turks over here, but the Greeks were deported in the 50's and 60's. After that, there was the Cyprus issue. We had a dictatorship in Greece from 1967 until 1974. At the last year of the dictatorship, the dictators decided to create a dictatorship in Cyprus too, the Turkish Army intervened, in order to protect Turkish Cypriots, but what happened is that they occupied half the island and killed or sent the Greek-Cypriots away from their homes. The dictatorship, that was the pretext of the invasion ended, but the turkish army never left the occupied area. Not to mention several demands of Turkey to own islands that are greek, according to the italians who owned them before and gave them to Greece after losing the WW2, or the demand to keep our national water at 6 miles, when the international law says 12, or the nationalist attacks to the leader of the greek orthodox Church, whose seat is traditionally in Turkey. So, you see, there is a long history that is not yet in the past, but thougout this history the people were not hostile. We have lived together, shared the same food, achitecture, culture in many respects, and it is very easy for a Greek and a Turk to be friends, more than they think. In fact, during these historical calamities, many Turks helped Greek refugees or vice versa, but of course many were much less kind.

haha, stereotypically they do,
but that conflict has long gone, and few people living in Greece actually have a hatred towards turks.
There is still a lot of humor about the subject, and it is spoken about, but I have met no one in Greece that actually hate Turks with a passion...

It's because a long time ago, Greeks were enslaved by the Turks, and that went on for a long time..

No Greeks don t hate Turkish people.I know many stories of good and bad Turks and Greeks during their coexistence .Anyway if you are half Italian you know the expression " IL Turci" used to scare people.I personally think that the rest of Europe does not want Turkey and used us in the past, saying The Greeks don t want you. That is why we now support Turkeys entrance to Europe because we encourage the democratic powers in Turkey this way. The truth is that there are also other nations also having problems with Turkey, like Armenians but I think we must live in peace and make a good neighborhood

Let me correct you dear friend. Your question should be "Why Greeks and Turks hate each other?".
Because of their background history. And it's not the only two of them. But because of some "other's interests" it suits them to continue this hatred between the two counties.

First of all this site is for Travel-Greece, not for politics, not for history, not for survivor 3 or any similar issues…

As far as your question is concerned

There were problems since the first encounter of Greeks and Ottomans. In the beginning you had the established Byzantine Empire and the Ottomans coming from the East and raiding the eastern borders of the empire. This raiding continued for several centuries until the Ottomans grew in power and size and captured the entire Byzantine Empire, establishing the Ottoman Empire in its place. The Greek revolution against the Turkish yoke started approximately 400 after the capture of the capital of the Byzantine Empire in 1453. The liberation of Greece to its current borders took several decades e.g. the revolution started in 1821 and Thessaloniki was liberated in 1912. During the years of captivity, there were several issues like the child gathering: from time to time, the first born boys of the Greek families were taken away from them and were raised as Turks. They were a special class called “γενίτσαροι” who (of course didn’t know their true origin) were brought up to hate Greeks and were actually the most cruel towards Greeks. – would you like someone who kidnapped your child and taught it to hate you?

Then you have the minor Asia catastrophe and the Pontiac Genocide (1916-1923). You can read about the slaying of innocent civilians by the Turkish army, the labour battalions which served as a way to kill through exhaustion and bad conditions lots of Greeks (read “Number 31328” by Elias Venezis). You can also read at wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontic_Greek_Genocide

After that you have the invasion in Cyprus in 1974. In the name of “protecting the rights of Turkish Cypriots”, Turkey invaded and captured half of the island. Greek Cypriot civilians were killed, others “disappeared” and as you understand many were kicked out of their homes in Northern Cyprus. Up to date the matter has not been resolved and the politics of the Turkish government on it trouble not only Greece but also the other members of the EU, creating obstacles for the negotiations of Turkey for its entry in the EU.

Furthermore, you have issues that started in the 90’s and still remain like the fact that Turkey doesn’t allow Greece to do research in the Aegean Sea for oil or to expand its national waters from 6 to 12 miles. Turkey doesn’t even agree to discuss these issues and threatens that any move from Greece’s part on these will be dealt with war. The border issue is quite surprising, since all EU countries have expanded their national waters to 12 miles almost a decade ago and since Greece is a member country it should have done the same but also the Turkish position becomes offensive towards the EU and not just Greece.
Also, let me just mention the incident of Imia in the mid 90’s and the incident with the jet fighters last summer…

There are more issues with the Greek minority in Turkey (and its rights), the muslim minority in Greece (which Turkey claims to be an ethnic Turkish minority, contradicting the signed treaties) and the Christian Orthodox Patriarchy in Konstantinoupoli (Instabul for the Turkish)

You see that from day one till today there is hostility, there are problems and unresolved issues. Some say that we shouldn’t dwell in the past. But we can’t undo history and we cannot let it aside, especially since the attitude of Turkey towards Greece seems to remain the same over the centuries. Furthermore, Turkey refuses to acknowledge its crimes of war against Greece. In the effort to promote Greek-Turkish friendship, the Greek government is trying to remove such crimes from the history textbooks in school instead of persisting for an apology from the Turkish side. Greek people are rather offended by that. Germany acknowledged its mistake and crimes against the Jews during WWII; why can’t Turkey do the same for the period 1916-1923)?

Many people claim that most of these differences are a fault of the governments/politicians that the common people have nothing to do with these. If that were true I would expect the up-rise of the Turkish people against the current policies. The silence of the people is an indirect approval of them, and a hostile attitude towards Greece.

Read the modern history of Cyprus. The Turkish Cypriots had to be defended from the Greek army, that's why the island became divided. We the British must take responsibility for our lack of action during the initial problems. I have lived on both sides of the divide and have met some wonderful people. Unfortunately the north now has far more Turkish in it than Turkish Cypriots and I can see no way that the problem is going to be resolved. The Greek Cypriots voted strongly against it in the recent referendum the Turkish Cypriots voted strongly in favour of unity. It's very sad because the Turkish Cypriots remain very isolated without the benefits of EU membership that the south now has. I pray the problems will be resolved in my lifetime and with Turkey aspiring to join the EU they will have to be. Best wishes to all Cypriots and I'll see you soon.

I agree with ngiapapa. Why do u take for granted tht we are the ones who hate them and not the other way round?Try and post sth like "why do Turks hate Greeks?"though I unfortunately know tht Turks are really diplomatic in questions like these and they will answer "No,Greeks are friends!!!!!"
I would also like to ask "Why do Turks hate themselves?" as their social state confirms this aspect!
