Both a steel nail and an aluminum nail will corrode in moist air. The difference is that an aluminum nail forms a thin tenacious film of corrosion that protects it while the steel nail forms a soft surface film of corrosion that offers no protection allowing the entire nail to turn to rust. The part of a steel nail that corrodes may be any part that is wet or in contact with another type metal forming a corrosion cell (like a battery).

In any iron object, only rough surfaces corrode easily and smooth surfaces take longer to corrode. Obviously for corrosion to occur, that part shud be exposed to moisture and air.

So, for a nail, only head is exposed and hence will corrode easily
