I'm going to a ball soon, and I'm mulling over what type of dress I should wear. It's a formal event and held at the Fairmont Olympic in Seattle, so I'm guessing long gowns are in order. But I don't know how to pull off long dresses. And I'd feel out of place wearing a short dress, even a really nice one. I'm slim--111 lbs and 5'2'', 5'3'' on a good day, so it'd be laughable if I tried to wear something long and sleek. Do any of you ladies know what dress type I could wear? (I have good shoulders, kind of an hourglass figure but more straight hips, moderately toned arms and slim curves). I tend to avoid tube dresses though. Or about how high should my heels be so that I don't look completely overwhelmed?
What are good online sites besides Macys, Nordstrom and David's Bridal to look at dresses?
Thanks!

Trust me, if I thought I could get away with a nice cocktail dress I wouldn't even be asking this question. I asked my mom and she said go with long. I asked a couple more female invites and they said I'd probably be the only one doing so...

Find something that emphasizes the waist. Something with a sash or belt. Two-piece numbers work well or something that looks like two pieces. The point is to somehow separate your top half from your bottom half so you don't look like a stump.
Strapless gowns may also be good for you because they take the emphasis off of your lower half.
I am 5'1" and generally like to wear heels no higher than 3 inches but only because my feet are so small that anything else and I'm standing on the tips of my toes. But don't go chunky! Slimmer shoes create the illusion of a longer line.

Play up your curves and do a mermaid cut. That will also break up the floor length look on you.
Another possible choice could be an asymmetrical hem. Sorry; not sure what to recommend as far as online sites. Maybe check out some bridesmaid designer websites.

I'm shorter than you and have worn long straight dresses before, and they look fine, why not try something on and have a look. A great alternative is a tea length style dress, which comes sort of mid calf or a bit longer, very elegant.
Check out Dessy Designs website for some great dresses

At prom, my short and thin friend (she's maybe 5'0", 1"?) wore a strapless dress, long skirt all the way down the floor, very full skirt and sleek, simple design - she looked gorgeous. I think her heels were pretty tall - 3 or 4 inches, maybe? It didn't look at weird.
Anyway, 5'2" isn't that short! You won't look laughable on account of that, no way - have fun!

Find comfortable 3-4 inch heels to wear and that'd be good. You can look on JCPenney and Windsor for more dresses and I'd suggest a halter dress for you because you said you have good shoulders. Halters generally show off shoulders nicely. Good luck :)

5''7 isn't that tall, 5'7+ is seen tall for a girl. donning short looks super on tall women. donning long clothing makes them look even taller. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it additionally relies upon on the format of the costume and colour. Black makes you look taller, and the layout define too (vertical or horizontal). My female pal is tall and she or he looks sexier whilst she wears short costume. wish this facilitates.

Go to a nice dress shop where there are people that will help you decide what will fit best with your body type- they may even be familiar with the event you're attending. Plus you will get to be pampered!

Wear a dress that shows off more of your shoulders. It can look somewhat like this. http://www.mf00.com/__im__illuna-35-102__aquamarineassymetric.jpg This dress shows off your legs making you look taller and is certainly a beautiful gown as well. Wear stilletoes keeping comfort in mind.

Go to a tailor or seamstress- and get them to hem it (take it up from the bottom. Lot's of girls fit your figure- it 's very desirable too.
If not- try using dress-pins or safety pins to hide the excess fabric underneath.
