it really depends on what you're aiming for. If you want non-stop action then July/August is the perfect time. There are festivals almost every weekend and always something going on and the weather is awesome.
September is good if you want to aviod the crowds. Though it's still a bit crowded it's not as bad as the previous months but the weather is still good.

Having lived abroad for a long time, and hence having visited the Netherlands ( my country of origin ) as a traveler and even as a tourist, I found May to be best. The trees have fresh leaves, temperatures are neither too cool nor too warm, and there are no massive crowds of tourists, yet.
Here is an insider's tip: if you want to see the typical Dutch light and actually walk and bask in it, ( the light that became famous from by these 17th-century paintings ), then do come in September: take an umbrella, and see the most incredible light and skies in Europe !
Enjoy Amsterdam,
a Dutchman

I would say June or July, August can get a bit hot and there isn't air conditioning anywhere in the country. Just be ready for lots of crowds everywhere; there are always thousands of tourists all summer long in Amsterdam. It's a very cool city, though!

july/august all depends on what it is you want out of your vacation in amsterdam, if you want certain activities or is it just because of the weather. do know htat that is the bussiest time also for tourists to be in amsterdam so it will be very crowded and hotels might be full and more expensive as well.lots of schools will be out for the summer break but you will have fun cause in summer time we have a lot of outdoor festivals that are free in the parks and the beaches are cool to hang out at.
have fun when you do come to Holland
