I think they have a lot of risks involved versus the pill. You're more likely to have a stroke or blood clots - best to consult your ob-gyne so he/she can prescribe a pill/birth control method that's good for you. I've tried around 3-4 kinds of pills before I found one that agrees with me (ortho trisprentec, generic of ortho-tricyclen). Also, since you are young, you might want to explore the lower hormone types, which causes less mood swings/changes.

I used it when I was 18, and I didn't like it at all! It was extremely sticky and the adhesive wouldn't come off of my skin when I removed the patch. The corners always came up when the patch would rub up against my clothes too. Also, I didn't like that people could see it through my clothes (like on my arm or back) or when I went swimming people could see it. Someone actually asked me if I was trying to quit smoking once when they saw it...I didn't like that!
It did seem to work, just the same as the pill, but It was just annoying to me. Also, I continued to use condoms while on it, because I wasn't too sure about if the corners coming up would effect it.
Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you :)

I was on the patch for 2 years or so (got off in August)....and there are some pros and cons (as with all things, right?). First the pros: easy to remember, cheap to replace, sticks FAIRLY well, convenient. Cons (for me): made me slightly anemic (while I was on it), left gross residue marks that had to be cleaned regularly, sometimes fell off, and made me feel like my heart was beating too fast, which was hurting me. So, I stopped the patch in August and was reading up on other bc, but the patch still seems like the best option for me personally. I got pregnant with hubby in November, so I don't have to worry about the bc decision for awhile now! Good luck.

My wife used the patches and they worked just as good as the pills.

I HATED the ortho-evra patch. When I wore it on my arm my whole arm would get stiff and sore. Get a pill (I wouldn't suggest OrthoTriCylcen) and get it in a low dosage.
