I read a review one or two years ago. It was a movie which began with the break up of a relationship and then went backwards to when the relationship was good. It was a mainstream movie that may have gone straight to dvd. Can anyone please help me with the title?

Sounds like 'Breaking Up' with Russell Crowe and Salma Hayek but that film is closer to 10 yrs old.
The Notebook is most likely what you're thinking of, although I don't recall it opening with a breakup as there was no relationship to begin with at that point.

I would have to go with "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" as well except that I do not believe it went straight to DVD.

It could be Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but that didn't start with a break up, but it did end well.
