They're very good for you apparently but the trouble is that people who eat them outdoors always leave either an unwanted pile of shells or a trail of them, depending on whether they were sitting or walking along whilst 'nibbling'.
On the other hand, they can make an imposing flower display, and with some of the recent introductions, a very colourful one as opposed to the more usual plain yellow petals.
Sunflower oil is useful for cooking too as it has little taste to impart.

They are a good source of vitamin K (phylloquinone) as well as an excellent plant protein. Vitamin K is required for the clotting of blood and wound repair.
Try sunflower seeds scattered on your cereal with blueberries plus linseed and pumpkin seeds. Powerful antioxidants!

I think a certain amount are good for you as they have oils your body needs. The black ones are of course great for birds. And of course the whole plant is loved by insects that need the pollen.

They are decorative; birds love them; you can bake them about 5 or less minutes and then let them cool and eat them yourself. I've found them a great diet food. They take so much time and effort that I just don't want to eat.
