It is possible to have the 'water break' and only have minimal leakage. Others have more of a gush. Depends on where the break is located. Because there is an element of incontinence of urine during pregnancy, there is a tendency to overlook a mild leak. If you are term (you are), then you should go to the ER, because if you have a rupture of membranes for a prolonged period of time, it puts you at risk for infection, which is bad for both you and the baby.

The "dry birth" story is really an old wives tale. Your water might break and just leak and you not know if, but the body keeps making amniotic fluid (the water) to replace it so there is no truly dry birth. Maybe your mom means there was no gush, or maybe she didn't see as much fluid as with another of her births or something.

If your water has broken and you have no contractions, don't stress. If it were me (I had my 3 babies at home and am into natural health), I'd wait till morning and get a good night's sleep. You can go into the office and be checked then. They have special paper strips that indicate if it is amniotic fluid or not.
The general rule is to allow 24 hours between the breaking of the waters and delivery.

Water's breaking can happen any time before or during labor so it's not necessarily an indication that something's going to happen tonight. It's not at all unusual to leak urine and think it might be amniotic fluid, but it would be more constant, not just when you went to pee.

Get some sleep and God bless you and your baby.

If you are going to the doctor tommorow, just tell him/her and they can test to see if it urine or amneotic fluid.

Even if it is your 'waters'....dont worry its no big deal. With my first child it started leaking before the contractions started...it took about 24 hrs for my contractions to start. I hear it can be much longer than that. They may admit you to the hospital soon, to keep an eye on you and the baby.

You cannot really 'dry out' because the body will keep refilling the fluid. They suggest you dont take a bath or have sex...they dont want anything contaminating the babys environment if the 'seal' is broken.

One way to tell if it really is a leak in your waters is when you lay down the leaking is more...once you stand up, the baby's head kinda plugs it up and it leaks less.

Just let your doc know in the morning. Skip the tub and have a shower just in case...and get your bag packed....you never know at this stage!

Good luck

Sometimes a woman can leak amniotic fluid and it just feels like extra discharge. I know that I thought my water broke during my first pregnancy and it was just an increase in discharge that occurs during late pregnancy. I had my water broken during labor and it felt like a flood coming out of me!! You will definately know if this happens. The doctor can perform a test that will detect amniotic fluid by just putting a small test strip inside your vagina (not painful). Don't worry, you will be okay until morning.

usually if your water breaks then you will go into labour with 24 hours. But dont have a bath as it can risk infection. Just phone your midwife up, its better to be safe than sorry. Also if your water has broken and you dont go into labour within a certain amount of time I think it can be dangerous for teh baby. Just ring up the midwife, she will know. Good luck x

hi there, my water broke 1 day before i went in to labour the first time, if at any time you think your water has broken please go straight to the hospital, if your water brakes and you are not in labour you have to be given medicine to stop infection and you may be induced... that is what happened to me the first time.... sometimes you dont know as my sister only got a trickle which she thought was pee.. but it wasn't.. please just go to the hospital... my husband and i went up there many times thinking my water had broken..
with my second my water broke when i was 7 hrs into my labour..so it could happen any time.. good luck.. congrats for the new bub on the way...

Have you already lost your mucus plug? If you have alot more moisture than usual, it could be it is leaking. Try putting on a pad, see how long it takes to fill up. If it doesn't take long, then I would go just to get checked. If your water broke, it usually doesn't take long, but everybody is different.

Hum...I think if you really think it's your water, you should get checked. Better safe than sorry. You should be able to call the dr and ask him. If you're not comfortable with that, or dr isn't available, then just go to the ER.

Good luck!!

When your water breaks it's a lot more fluid than you would expect! They broke my water in the hospital, and it was a huge gush and very warm, and it kept flowing (I couldn't stop it). It feels a lot different than peeing.

What probably happened with your mom was it was a small hole that just leaked. Same thing happened to my mom...usually you can tell the difference because you can't control the flow and it's not the same color as pee.
