Happy New Year to everyone. It was in the news this morning that the number of individual bankruptcy has increased to 100,000. What do you think our society is going to look like.Is rich getting richer and poor is getting pooer or we all are getting better off. Your views please.

Economies have their ups and downs depending of course on the policies of the various administrations. The Cheney administration has chosen that route which favours the rich, hence, they are indeed getting richer. The poor, despite the rhetoric of compassionate conservatism are getting poorer and the middle class is disappearing. Corporatocracy is at its highest level since the robber barons. Our government (us) owes more now than ever before and we are at the mercy of those who have lend us money , the Chinese and the Arab oil rich nations hold too much US paper. The situation is far direr than what is being propagandized over the media. And the dollar is slipping daily. Not good omens. Must get back to fiscally responsible accounting. You can not have a half a trillion dollar war and cut taxes at the same time. Even D students in Economics 101 know that.
But not the Bechtel corporation, or Exxon-Mobil or.....

The only reason for the increase in the number of bankruptcies is the government, this one is changing the time during which a bankrupt is excluded from most financial services. this removal of the stigma has, like all the other actions to placate minority groups, reduced peoples perception of bankruptcy so seeing it as the panacea for the evil of over spending. If the government can over spend and then charge everyone for their errors then why not the ordinary citizen?

swings and roundabouts. The rich are getting richer while the rest of us are going backwards. I earn more money now than any previous jobs Ive had but not any better off. If ever i get a small pay rise say the rate of inflation, all the utilities company's put their rates up even more so I'm back to square one. actually I'm worse off.

You ain't seem nothin' yet....just wait until the oil runs out in a few years time and the whole world will be bankrupt.

America first. as they depend on oil more than the rest of us....they have 4% of the world's population but they use 25% of the world's oil....that's one BIG Achilles Heal.

Thanks to this government I don't think anyone who has lived here and paid their taxes for years is getting richer. The only ones better off are those on the dole, illegal immigrants, asylum seekers, Labour supporters, Blair, his chariy robbing B*tch and his entire cabinet, past & present, and the Poles, Bulgarians and Romanians!

Unless the rules have changed; people can run up alot of debt and then just file for bankruptsy. It's too easy. Donald Trump did it. If he could do it, anyone can. People now a days need to have it all. In my day, if you didn't have the money, you wouldn't get it.

i work 7 days a week, have done for 25 years, struggle like mad to keep going, bills rise, suppliers bills hit the roof, tell that to customers when i want to increase charges, the reply is "were gonna shop around for a better price" it stinks, think ill pack it all in and go on the dole

The problem is that people want it all even if they can't afford it. This then leads to high levels of debt and insolvency. If people could be live within their means and credit wasn't so easy to obtain then this problem wouldn't exist.
