I am planning a vacation this summer. The two cities I need to choose from is D.C. and New York City. Also, what sites should I hit up?

They are close enough you can take a train or bus and see both, you know. However, I would not presume to choose between them, having seen both only many years ago. In New York, the one thing you really have to see is the Statue of Liberty (check out my avatar). Of course, there is Broadway and if you can get tickets, lots of theater you won't find elsewhere. There are museums and galleries and exhibits of all kinds all over, and frankly, you will need a tour guide book to tell you about them all. Do some first-class shopping, too.

Washington is mostly good for being the seat of government, and therefore having some great historical and political places to visit. The Smithsonian is a can't miss. I was fascinated by the Treasury Department's museum, too. They have a lot of investigators and have an interesting display about big time gangsters and like that. And I felt really at home and in good company sitting on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, even though there's not much there besides the statue or wasn't in the 1960s.) There's something about a memorial that is on every penny in circulation.

Since you are to be there in the summer, notice that DC is further south, and therefore presumably hotter. But I think New York feels hotter in the summer, maybe because there are fewer open spaces and it is a dirtier city.

Have I helped, or persuaded you to stay home instead?
