You have not mentioned whether you run Windows or Mac or Linux or whatever. If you have got Windows XP, then go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Administrator > Set password for administrator.

If you are running Windows XP, you can put a password on your user ID so no one else can use it. If you are not networked, no one else can use the computer at all. If you are on a network, there's no reason to worry about the physical computer on your desk, only the network server.

If your using windows xp, click on start, click on control panel. a window will open up. click on user accounts, click on the account name you are using, then click on create password. if there is more than one user name for that computer, then u will have 2 do the same thing for each user name.

those parts about user password are correct, BUT you must enable the 'on resume, display welcome screen' to force viewing person to re-enter the password. go to blank spot on desktop and right click>properties>screen saver>screensaver section and check the box.
this would be where you leave your workstation, but leave your unit running.
