The best question here! Bravo. We are still living the nightmare of the Nixon years. His resignation and the vehemence with which the Dems went after him over an insignificant matter ( petty inconsequential burglary) aroused the Reps and divided the country. Since that time revenge seeking Reps have gone after Dems with a vengeance unparalleled in history. Hence the impeachment of Bill Clinton (over another NOTHING personal issue) and the rise of the neocons, the Rovian cabal, the Tom DeLays etc. They are out looking for Democrats' blood. And the country is divided more than any other time in history except the civil war.
Sadly, nobody goes after Bush for his horrendous lies that have killed hundreds of thousands. A question of values.
When Clinton lied, nobody died.

Did you read this or is this what your teacher, or someone else told you?
I am 50 years old and lived through both of them.
Nixon's vice president was busted on tax evasion charges stemming from a real estate scam that occured in his home state of Maryland. (That's how Gerald Ford came into the picture, he replaced Spiro Agnew) Nixon's aides were responsible for a burglary, broke the law, and the people that performed the burlglary were caught red handed! Also, there was rumblings that in the late 60's Nixon cancelled a brokered agreement to get the troops out of Viet Nam in 1970. He wanted to end the war in '72, as that would have been closer to the election, thus helping him win a second term --without regard to the additional lives lost.
Clinton received oral sex from an aide...
You should read a little about an individual named Leon Jaworski. He spent the better part of three years investigating Nixon.
Nixon had to suffer the humiliation and disgrace of being the first president to resign from office, and ultimately four of his aides did jail time. Had he not resigned, he surely would have been impeached, and possibly would have faced criminal charges.
It's exactly what you said. The scandal and investigation went on for months, where Nixon's investigation went on for years.
The Republican Party was never in danger of destruction, but would have been the minority party for years.
I suspect you were't around during the tumultuous 60's, the Viet Nam War, or Nixon's presidency. They were some diasterous times for Americans ending with Nixon's resignation.
President Ford's pardoning of Nixon, had virtually nothing to do with the Republican Party. If you want to view it as a sort of symbolic gesture, it was his way of saying, "STOP Already!" We're done with the violence, the riots, the war, and we're done with Nixon. It's time for a new chapter...
And his reasoning was that Nixon and his family had suffered enough. Just having to live with the legacy he left was punishment enough.
If he hadn't, the country would have been dragged through an impeachment, possible criminal charges being brought forth on a former president, and that certainly would have taken years.
In a strange way, there was the usual partisan politics with people like Ted Kennedy calling for President Ford's head as a result of his pardon. During President Ford's funeral, Senator Kennedy reiterated something he said several years ago, and that being that after he thought about the pardon, he realized that President Ford did the right thing, and that the country moving beyond the trauma was more important than the legalities that Nixon would have faced.
My answer's a little long, but I hope it shed some light on the subject for you.

Clinton did such a wonderful job in office they needed something to pin on him. So they butted in to his sex life. Imagine of Clinton didn't have lying about sex under oath against him. Wow the republican would have never gotten into office.
Even with the pardoning of Nixon the republicans lost office when the election rolled around. Ford Pardon Nixon knowing full well that it would cost him the election. Therefore he Pardon Nixon because it was the christian thing to do!

Both the Nixon and Clinton scandals should both be called Deep Throat and put in the history books. We'll never know why Ford did what he did. He took his decision to his grave.

Nixon's "crimes" were misdemeanors compared to Clinton. The scandal was a blanket used to divert the public's minds away from Clinton's real high crimes like TREASON and collusion with the enemy, namely China.
