all woods / anytime you use a saw you should use a mask.

I do a lot of sanding on wood because I do Intarsia and the most dangerous woods that I find are Purpleheart, Honduras Mahogany, Padauk and Black Walnut. Even wearing a paper type mask I still get some of this dust in my throat and when this happens it irratates my throat. I tried using cartridge type masks but they are too cumbersome for working with small pieces exspecially within 12-24 inches from your face. I was sanding some Lacewood one time and even my eyes started to burn. I know you should always use a mask. I wear glasses so when I use paper masks the glasses seem to fog up forcing me to throw safety out the window. Of course at my age I rationalize it by saying I gotta die from something someday.

Breathing in particles of any sort is only asking for trouble. Some stuff is benign. Some exotics are quite toxic to skin and the dust from it, when aspirated, can cause some serious problems, if not death. (there's a purple wood that comes to mind, but I can't remember the name of it)
Overall, it's an irritant to your lungs and sinuses.
Just using a chop saw, or ripping a board such as maple or pine...I'd say it's probably not critical. Heavy sanding, turnings, I'd definitely use a respirator (one of those silly little 'dust masks' isn't going to help much with this much product being tossed into the air).

You should really use a mask to cut anything especially wood. Why? Because you can breath in all kinds of toxins that your body will not want, and eventually could make you very sick as you age. Trust me, I've lost family members who use to work where they should have worn masks, and they have passed away.

Sinus problems expecially pine...fine dust is bad for lungs...if a piece would go flying the mask will deflect it...
