I'm a shy person. I remember always being shy since I was a kid. I think it was because I was overweight in childhood and adolescence and I got bullied and put down.

Do people realise this about shy people or do they just think they are being lazy or stand offish?

i think i was always shy. but it only became more prominent when i hit puberty. when i was a kid i always wanted to be accepted where ever i went so you wouldnt really be able to tell that i was shy but there were a few adults that observed it and told my mom much to her surprise. But now almost an adult, i can say i'm definitely a "shy"/neurotic/anti-social/whatever person. i tend to freeze up around people i dont really know even "friends" and although there are time i feel the need to talk with someone and do some "group activity" ultimately i would feel the need to be alone.
as to why i'm like that i'm not so sure. maybe i think too much.

from feedbacks i get from others, sometimes i'm perceived as being Cold and stand offish, others, a person to push around. both views usually leads me into alot of conflict with people casuing me to withdraw even more. there are very few people that really understands someone who is "shy".

thats my take from someone who is shy =)

i don't ever remember not being shy, but i never let it show as a kid. i thought i was just a terrified kid. now as an adult, i am still shy, hesitant to make friends and form relationships because don't want to be put down or bullied when new people pretend to get to know me. i never have thought of a shy person as lazy or stand offish, just scared.

I was never a shy kid and when I saw kids who didn't talk much or stuck to themselves, I assumed they were shy. I never thought they were selfish- I think you can tell when someone's shy.

Now I'm a lot more shy than I used to be... I had some social anxiety that cropped up out of nowhere when I began going to college!

I was a super shy kid for the same reason as you. I was fat, and always got put down..so I just kept to myself, didnt like to be around people. But as I grew up...I quit caring what people thought of me and my shyness turned into anti socialness. Im not really shy anymore...I just dont like being around people.

I have always been shy. People have various interpretations such as the ones you suggested. That's their problem. If you want to let people know your shy that's OK. Some other people may suggest a cure and they may be worth giving a go.
