I heard that some of the richest men either never went or dropped out of college. Men like Bill Gates, Dave Thomas (founder of Wendy's), and Bill Cosby. I'm thinking to myself, if they can do it, so can I. So is 4 years of college really worth it? Or should I spend those 4 years gaining real world experiences?

People like them are very rare--which is why there are only a few of them. For a majority of people in this country, it's VERY hard to get a well-paying job without a college education. There are only so many "real world experiences" in the job world that ONLY require a high school degree. Even some secretary jobs require a bachelor's degree now. The number of well paying, full time jobs in America has been decreasing rapidly over the years. That's why there's been such a push to make college education free--because it's just THAT important.

If you really don't want to get a 4 year undergrad degree, I'd definitely suggest that you go to a community college and at least get an associate's degree. It's proven that people with associate's degrees make thousands more than people with only high school diplomas, bachelor's make thousands more tha associate's, master's make thousands more than bachelor's, and PhD's are at the top of the list.

So in short--yes, 4 years of college is really worth it. But again, definitely try for at least an associate's if 4 years doesn't look good for you. Or if not, carefully carefully pick a career path that will train you. And even then, you'll be paying money to them, too. The best way to go is definitely 4 years of college.

Good luck!

Bill Gates attended Harvard. Bill Cosby attended Temple and received a degree from the U of Massachusetts. I don't know about Dave Thomas. But successful people who did NOT go to college are few and far between. The chances of it happening are rare. It can happen - but it's very rare - and if you think it will happen to you - you are gambling with your success.

YES! You will get a better job if you have an education. There are exceptions. I doubt that many rappers have a degree - and yet they are making lots of money. But even most athletes have degrees. Education is something that is very available in this country. You should take advantage of it's availability. Statistics show that college grads make significantly more than high school grads. And while I was in college - I DID gain real world experiences. The college experience is a fabulous time of learning and bonding with friends you will very likely have for life.

Bill Gates got into Harvard University but he dropped out. Bill Cosby got a BA degree from Temple University, a MA and a Ed.D (doctor of education degree) from University of Massachusetts. Dave Thomas never completed high school, but things were a lot different back then when he dropped out. Nowadays, it is very very hard for a high school drop out to be as successful as Mr. Thomas.

Most people dont have "the chance" that those 3 had. Thats why most people need a bachelors degree if they want a well paying job. I know that many popular rappers make a lot of money and most of them dont have a college degree (many probably dont have a high school diploma), but they make a ton of money becuase they are hot artists. When people stop listening to them anymore and make them unpopular, most of them (probably all) will have low paying jobs.

I think a college degree is worth your time and money because its what most companies want their employees to have and its one of the main qualifications for almost every well paying career.

depends on who you are and where u live. Im guessing you live in the united states. But im from Canada im in school to be a registered nurse which is a 4 year degree and my ex-boyfriend was making 3-4X what i will make when im done when he didnt even finish high school because he was workig in the oil patch. It also depends on how hard your willing to work if you wanna work day in and day out doing the same hard manual labour and not using you brain cool but if you want maybe some job stability maybe goto college. And think carefully your probably gonna be doing this the rest of your life so if there is something you really want to do and u need a degree goto college if your not sure dont waste your time and money try doing different jobs if you dont like it quit and try something else till you know what you want to do and then maybe goto trade school or colege
