This is ridiculous. Firstly they hike public transportation charges, then they dream up more ways to hit motorists.
These charges, if introduced should go to reducing charges that are paid by you and me on public transport, and also to make the journey more pleasant. It is so expensive to travel by public transport nowadays.
I have seen no real changes since I was a kid, and some of the transport leaves a lot to be desired.
This extra burden seems to just go in the coffers of the government, and disappear in government bureaucracy.

The government raises money from fuel tax, VAT on motoring products and road tax. If it spent some of the money that we already pay on the roads, then that would be a start. Instead it tries to screw more out of us with the congestion charge and road pricing. We could all use the railways instead. I thought about using the train to get from Crewe to Stansted airport. It would have cost £105 (€140, US$200) for a two and a half hour journey. I drove to Bulgaria last year. France, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia all have better roads than the UK. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the war costs more than we spend on rail and roads. Last week saw the UK pay off it's debts from WWII. Here we go again!

You have to admire the sly bas*ards, they are thinking ahead on this one.
If they can get a toe hold now on making the public think road charging by the mile is acceptable (although, that is technically what fuel duty is?), then in ten years time when there may well be many more fuel cell powered, or pure eletric cars there will be in place allready a way of charging those cars.
Thats what this idea is for, to combat people avoiding paying road tax as it currently is only enforced upon either engine size or CO2 emmisions depending upon age of the vehicle.

The big problem with something like that is that it takes money for the repair and so saves money from the general fund that would pay for the upkeep otherwise so it is basically another form of taxes rather than a change for better or worse just as in the case of lottery money for schools

Another tax in any name, but if we get a reduction in road tax, or even better road tax abolished, then there could be arguments that persuade me it could be better than what we currently have

Well...I live in florida, and i know of 3 highways that already have it, and have had it for a while. But i think it a good idea! It pays for new roads, and helps keeps the roads a little safer by paying for more police enforcement.
But if they use it on other things other than highway/road safty then i think its a waste of time and money!
