Bowl games are all about making money. They originated as a way for teams from different parts of the country to play each other back when travel wasn't as simple and conferences were very local. But when people decided they would pay big money to see a big time east coast team play a big time west coast team, the bowls took on greater significance. It became a sign of prestige when your team was invited to play in one, because it meant that you had a good team and you had a chance to prove yourself against a comparable team from elsewhere in the country that you otherwise wouldn't ever play.
Today, it's all about the sponsorships and selling the advertising to make money. If the NCAA truly cared about a national champion, they would scrap the bowls and have a tournament like they do at Division 1-AA, Division II and Division III. But because the bowls are so ingrained into the college football landscape, and because of the significant amount of money invested into them, you won't see it changed any time soon.
As for how many there are today, it is definitely getting to be a little ridiculous, especially when you only need to go 6-6 to be invited to one (the Mediocre Bowl?), and when the 7th or 8th place team in your conference can still go. There are 119 Division 1-A teams (or "Bowl Subdivision", as they want it to be called now). So with 31 bowls on the 2006-2007 schedule, more than half of Division 1-A teams got to play in a bowl game.
But as long as there's a sponsor out there who wants to host a bowl game, then they will find teams to play in it and make their money.

College Football doesn't have a playoff system like the NFL, where good teams have a chance to compete and make it to the Super Bowl. Each different bowl game invites different college's to play at their bowl. Although the #1 and #2 teams usually play each other.. this year it is Ohio St vs. Florida

harry is an idiot. there are so many different bowl games because there are 200 something teams in college football, and the teams who usually perform well, get bowl bids for a post season game between another good team. it's a nice way of seeing two good teams olay against each other for their last game of the season.

Its a money thing for big name companies to sponsor all of these different bowl games with all of these ridiculous names, such as the Chic - fil - A bowl.
I mean I liked chic fil a when i lived in the south but they do not need a bowl named after it.

MONEY MONEY MONEY. It is all about the money. So they have Bowls because Companies pay to sponsor and give them MONEY. They are all basically meaningless except the final one which is played Jan. 8 and is the National Title game.

Because they can't figure on how to have a National Championship so they have like 10 Champions. It is a mess. Also... the almighty dollar has a lot to do with it.
