I have an idea and I would like to sell it to a company rather than produce the product on my own. I know I can get a provisional patent on the idea, but what's the next step? How do I sell my idea to a company?

You can sell your idea to any company and they can tell you what you want to hear but you need to know that you need more than one patent on a product. Most scam companies are the ones who only offer you one. So be careful and make sure you get 2 or someone else may steal your idea.
