I work as a freelancer and this is my first year filing as one. I work from home, and halfway through the year I moved.

For the projects I did in the first half of the year before I moved, would the 1099 forms the eligible ones would send (the ones for which I made over 600 dollars, I've been told) be sent to my old address, or my new one? Do companies send 1099 forms directly to their contractors or do they send them through the government?

I haven't received forwarded mail since the first few months since I moved so I don't know if it's still working...

The 1099's will be mailed to the address of record. If you moved more than 6 months ago your forwarding order has expired (and some companies state right on the envelope do not forward).

Because the income will be reported to the IRS rather you get a copy or not, the easiest thing to do is contact those companies that paid you more than $600 and give them your new address.

Congrats on the freelancing!

The forms will get sent to whatever address the employer has for you in his records. You may need to file a forwarding order with the post office; stop in and inquire. Forwarding orders typically are good for a year.

You have to update your new address with those companies. Also you might send try to re-start your mail forwarding. There may be a charge, but it is worth it.

Call the businesses whose forms have not reached you and give them your correct address or pick the form up.
