I went on it around the time a few of my friends did. We all gained weight, but one gained about 30 lbs in the first 3 months. One friend bleed non stop. Another had to be put on hormones because it put her into menopause at age 24 (was causing her ovaries to shut down). One friend went into sever depression with it.
I was on it for almost five years. My doctor refused to continue giving it to me without me signing a sheet removing him from any legal action because of it becoming black boxed. It is causing major permanent bone loss in women that are using it even if they are doing cal supplements. I've been off it for about a year now, but I have to go in for the next few years and continue getting bone scans to make sure there was no damage.
I have a friend that switched from Depo to the patch and she loves it. She says she hasn't had any psychological side effects, and only slight weight gain, but nothing bad (and to be expected from any BC).
You might want to also look into other birth control like the ring. Many people avoid the pill because of remembering it.

Depo Provera can make you gain weight because it is only delivering progesterin, not estrogen. It can also make you not have a period completely or bleed or spot all the time. If you have irregular periods or a tendency to gain weight, do not do Depo-provera. The birth control patch has been linked to stroke, heart attack and blood clots. Some doctors are saying now that it is not safe. Your best bet would be the Nuva Ring or the pill. Just make sure to use condoms for the first month you begin any birth control to prevent pregnancy.

The only girl I ever knew that had the depo shot gained like a million pounds. And that is exactly what I think of whenever I think of the depo shot. After that I was scared to ever even consider getting it.

I was on the shot for nearly 5 years on and off...The first time i got the shot was in the hospital right after having my son & i bled for almost 5 months just about non-stop. After a while it calmed down. I never really had any other problems with it. No cramping, no dizziness, none of that. Everybody reacts to medications differently though.

I took the Depo and bled everyday after. One of the many side effects. I swear I had every side effect they said might happen. Needless, to say it's a great birth control...You're boyfriend won't want to come near you. Never took it again!

I did both and never would do them again. The depo stopped my periods which were fine but makes you gain to much weight and the patch made me vey sick. I would go with the pill. gl

I took Depoprovera for 6 years. I am not taking it anymore, because I wanted to check if it was that that was causing me severe migraines. And i think it might be that. I did not gained weight I just had major migraine problems.
I also lost interest in sex.
