Is it illegal to keep a tortoise as a pet free in your garden in India?

Its like this. When We built our house we found them there and left them there without disturbing. They are ok in our garden.Is it still illegal?

Definetly illegal.
As per wildlife protection act of India ( I don't know clauses), it is illegal to keep birds, wild animals ( including tortoises), etc as pets.

It is also illegal because of PETA rules ( Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)
