If the motherboard is marked smm1 , smm2 , smm3 , smm4 , can you switch them ? I have 1 ,2 , & 4 will that work ? Can I /should I put #4 in the #3 slot?

Depends on what kindof RAM you have. But usually, yes that would work. RD-RAM being the exception.

Usually SIMM slots need to be filled in pairs, and should be filled in order. However, only the mainboard manual can be sure.
