Because commercialism knows no bounds.

There has been fertility festivals around that time for hundreds of years, but any more it's just a holiday about buying stuff and giving it to someone, and it's usually pressed onto you by the people that sell stuff like candy and cards.

Basically, you celebrate Valentines Day for the same reason we do: because some company wants to make money.

I think that St. Valentines' Day is a swell excuse to sell things anywhere. When I first gave this a look I was thinking Portugese Goa and the Jesuits, then the English. May have been both. But it is likely Woman's Magazines as well. It is a boon to Jewelers, confectioners, and florists. It provokes guilt in men who fail in thoughtfulness to the woman in their lives, it requires them to be soft and sentimental and generous. It does not require that they be good at it only that they make an honest attempt. This harms no man, except financially.
Its been my understanding that the sub continent, with its robust and ancient religions, has never met a holiday it didn't like. Although, with so many already, why adopt such a small one. While it has Christian roots, with a early bishop who arraigned anonymous dowries for poor Christian girls, it is wholly secular in its celebration.
Now, if you could use another, I recommend you guys take up Halloween, I think your multi faceted society would do a really splendid job of integration and elaboration. S

The same reason we celebrate English new year, Mother's day, Father's day etc.

From one point of view we want to convert ourselves to western culture and we think that celebrating those occasions are a shortcut to reach there.

Another reason in Indian culture there is no celebration to express love to my beloved the way it can be done on Valentine's day.
