this is a bit of a dry read, but basically says that if the man smokes/drinks, he could damage his sperm cells. If the sperm make it to the fallopian tubes when an egg is present, then chances are you can get pregnant. Damaged sperm can in fact cause fertilization of the egg when present, and if that happens, can leave you open to having a child with a whole host of potential problems or possible birth defects. The rate of the defects go up as you get older as well.

I think I may have already answered this question for you on another board, but just in case, I'll answer it here, too.
My fiance doesn't smoke ciggarettes at all, and drinks beer occasionally (pretty much whenever he has the chance) and smokes marijuana (much more than I htink he should, not nearly as often as he thinks he should).
Based on when my birth control was messed up, it took us one cycle to conceive my son. We weren't actively trying to have a baby, but if you are, you should tell him to not drink and smoke for at least 48 hours prior to sex.
Smoking does affect a man's fertility, lowering sperm count and mobility (making them act sluggish so they don't swim proper), and drinking affects his sex drive. I don't know any website that I can give you for statistics, but I know many people where both parents smoke pot and were able to conceive without trouble or even by accident.
If you try for 6 months and nothing happens, I would suggest going to the doctor and seeing if there isn't a medical reason as to why it's not happening for you.
Good luck!

My ex was by definition a "pothead" and smoked MANY cigarettes a day got me pregnant. The chances are unknown, Im sure marijuana use can affect how long it takes for a couple to become pregnant.. But really, all those hippies in the 60s had kids just fine. Im not at all saying its the best circumstances to have a baby, but yes, you can definately still get pregnant.

easily, you forget all the crack babies that are being born.
one thing the man's alcoholism can cause birth defects, not as often as a woman who is but it still can damage the sperm. also its very dangerous and unfair to raise a child in this type environment.

I'm going to use the grown up words here.
If the couple has sex and doesn't use a condom, it doesn't matter whether he drinks and smokes pot or not. If semen gets in her vagina, she could get pregnant either way.
Don't be a fool. Wrap his tool.
