The book is Deception Point by DAN Brown. The deception was the fact that the "meteorite" was actually a peice of rock from the sea placed there to help the President win the elections against Senator Sexton. Since Sexton was aiming at the failure of NASA, which was greatly funded by the present govt., Pickering planted the "meteorite" there to strenghten the President's campaign.
