No, but it is terribly disrespectful.

I couldn't find a Federal statute that specifically says that it's illegal to threaten the President. I would like to note that threatening anybody is usually considered assault (not battery). Assaulting the President will likely get you watched very closely for a bit to determine how serious you are.
Since this investigation costs a lot of money, they like to make a big deal about it (guns drawn, media, intimidation, the whole nine yards) so that others don't repeat it and cost them (erm... taxpayers, actually) more money.
They fully realize that a 14 year old girl is not very likely to kill a president. The secret service agents aren't stupid. (They actually have to have a degree in something as a prerequisite to getting the job.) They just wanted to make an example out of her so the next hundred or so people thinking about threatening the President won't.
In all likelihood, if somebody was going to make an attempt on the President, they wouldn't brag about it beforehand.
As for your question about tripping him, first, you already made the threat publicly, here. Have you received any phone calls or a knock on the door yet? Second, if you actually attempted to do it (e.g. actually showed up at some public event, got past the screeners and through security), they'd probably see you attempt to trip him and get you on some assault charge or something.

For something as innocent as that, no .. you're safe. We can even talk about throwing pies at him, or putting "kick me" signs on his back. Actually, now that you brought it up, I can think of a lot of things ...
However, mention the word kill or death and you'll have the secret service at your door. Didn't you see the news broadcast about the 14 year old girl who added into her blog on myspace that she'd like to see him dead? She was yanked out of school the next day, and interogated without a guardian or adult present.
Big bad president afraid of a 14 year old. Gosh oh gee.
Disclaimer: This post was in no way intended to be a threat to the president. I wouldn't want to shatter that incredbiliy fragile ego, and I have far too much to do tomorrow to deal with the secret service. So sorry Junior.

Crazy you say that because I was thinking these type of thoughts earlier today. I thought if I called the white house or emailed the President and tell him he sucks and wish he was dead like all the people he has killed if the military would then come to my home and arrest me. Probably both of us would be doing some time.

As long as your not threatening his life your safe. However I suggest you don't actually try to trip him up or the secret service would be all over you like a lawn mow on grass!!
