I think you almost have it right. You asked the right questions, but brought up the wrong topics.
As far as your topics, we are too fat! Take a look at the amount of credit card debt in this country, we don't save enough. And I'm not really sure what you mean by inadequate.
Now when you are talking about the messages or the messenger, I will assume you mean our media.
It is appropriate to tell us that we are fat. It's not appropriate to tell that to adolescent (or younger) girls. It's not appropriate to glorfy such reprobates as Paris Hilton, either.
I could go on, but I will assume you understand what I'm trying to convey.
In my opinion, I believe you are right. The messenger has done a horrible job, and we should be complaining very loud, but not with the points you bring up.

Do what I did - Throw away your TV set and never buy another one.
I also don't read the ad inserts in newspapers.
Ads are good at making you want to eat more, spend more, and worry more. They are to blame for us being too fat, too poor and too inadequate in the first place. The TV shows that the ads pay for continue to tell us how inadequate we are.

Some of us do...but the mainstream media doesn't give a s--t. There are enough stupid people who think this crap we are fed about what is beautiful or right or good, is wonderful. So we accept HIPHOP lingo as good, gunfire in every movie and too many TV shows as normal and premarital sex and dating as synonymous. Fat people eat too much and exercise too little. Skinny people are anorexic and sick. Poverty is the result of ignorance and laziness and beating up on people because they are gay, Jewish, black, Hispanic or simply different, is OK.
We're all gonna die!! When....is the question.

I just emailed a complaint to olay about using a 13 year old girl in their commecials aimed at 30 year olds....
So I do....I just wish more people did...
Age-ism is the most sacred prejudice in america - women are not allowed to age gracefully. So I intend to do so quite simply out of spite.

because the media tells us what we want to here, the media tells, the media doesn't "question" or "suggest", it TELLS. it only TELLS, because nobody else in this darn world knows exactly what their doing with them selves, and the media takes advantage of the fact we like listening to instructions
