I never ask a legit security question. I make something up along with a bogus answer and keep a record of it separately.

"How old was I when I learned how to play the piano?" Since I never learned to play the piano, the obvious answer is "Fruitcake".

Understand?

I take a different, easier, approach to security questions. Rather than try to think of something new each time and run all the risks, like someone else knowing the answer, someone else guessing the answer or me choosing something so arcane someday that I forget the right answer (or put it down wrong the first time!), what I do is let them pick it or type in something banal like "Mother's maiden name" — but the answer, now that's a different story...

For an answer, I put it in a form likely expected (no spaces perhaps, if I think they expect a single word on the other end of the internet). But what I put is gibberish. For instance, one place asking for my mother's maiden name might get "keu774nvs52k9" from me, maybe with a capital "K" since they expect a name. I keep a spreadsheet, password protected, with all the login/password/etc. details and I simply highlight, copy and paste my answer to their question. Then, if asked in the future for it, I can copy and paste the answer so I get it right, and easily at that.

It has worked beautifully for me since 1999. No one, and I mean no one, will ever guess my security question responses so as long as the file stays secure, I can always take an account back. Had to twice with Yahoo Chat ID's. No one else seems so insecure. Hmmm...

Ask a question like: How many times have I....?
Then have the answer not be a number so no one could guess it.

Well - personally my bank ask for:

Also try:

Favorite Pet's Name
SS# (backwords)

no, they don't want all of this, just examples for your use, come up w/ your own
