Alternators put out AC current. It is through a rectifier that the AC sign wave is cut in half by diodes that only allow voltage to flow in one direction.The DC battery works some what as a resistor to arrest the heat from blowing fuses. So 24 voltsAC is turned into 12 volts DC through the diode rectifier.I do not believe that 12 volt AC batteries exist.Thanks for your question.

ac is high amperage and dc is low in that application. it would be as safe as blow drying your hair in the shower. the amperage is the key amperage kills not voltage.

most auto/boat accessories and systems are low voltage, low electrical noise dc devices.
