I play poker for a living and help beginners and averages players each week to improve their game.
I suggest you to, pratice for free first(online), watch poker on tv, read magazines and books, play a few times with your friends and familly, just for fun. Go step by step. But for more specifics details and stategy, feel free to contact me on my site.
And keep in mind: Many players refuse to accept that poker is a difficult and complex game and it requires a lot from them!
You must do the hard work needed to win!
And by the way rounders is a cool movie, but it's just a movie and actually matt Damon do what you shouldn't do.....anyway.
Take care

NL Holdem is the best kind of poker (if you ask me) but playing limit and NL are a lot different so you should make sure you know which you want to learn. Also, playing tournaments and cash games are a lot different (at least in NL I'm not sure about limit) and I would suggest learning one at a time rather than both together. That way you can just alter the strategy you use for the other rather having to create two at the same time. Online poker is not the same as poker at the casino so don't be fooled! Of course the rules are the same but people tend to play more loose and agressively online than they do in most casino games I've played in. There's more to learn about poker than one person can do in a lifetime so be prepared for the long haul!
I would suggest reading poker articles by professionals. They usually offer good explanations for why they do certain things which helps understanding poker theory more.

First read the "Theory of Poker", I forget the author. Then, play, play and play. Online for free at first, then when you get an understanding for the game play for real money online but at low limits. Online competion is usually far superior to live play. Playing low limits you will lose a few thousand dollars before you start to get good.

Practice for free online; with Yahoo games, for instance.
"Poker Superstars II" is quite close to a real Texas Hold'em; its basic version is featured on Yahoo!Games.
If possible, learn some statistics.
Control your temper and body language.

yeah, what the guy above me said. You want to start out playin online so you get the hang of everything, i wouldn't recommend yahoo poker, because you cant really control how much money you want to bid, it just goes in turn.
