Noomoon is pretty accurate. It's different depending on what YOUR nationality is and which country you wish to visit.
Some countries require visas just to get in. These must be organized BEFORE you leave home - just getting on the plane and going to a different country may end up with you in prison or being deported! Some countries will permit you to stay for a limited time without a visa, but again this depends on the country.
Basically, you need to check visa requirements for each country you intend to visit.
If there are specific countries you are interested in just do a google search using the terms:
"visa requirements"
If you are American, add the qualifier site:gov to get official information.

When you enter the foreign country, they give you a time limit to stay. Even though you have a visa that may say 10 years, when you get off the plane and go through customs and do all the paperwork, they give you the amount of time that you can stay.

90 days without a visa for citizens of most North American and European countries. Check with the local Japanese embassy/consulate if you want to make sure. .

It depends much more on what country you are in, what your nationality is and what kind of visa you have. very situational.
