The government already legislates morality.

For example. Without legislating morality, it would be okay to have sex with a minor, would be alright for minors to do drugs, and it would be acceptable for all drug use, regardless of impact on society.

I'm a libertarian, so generally I'm against legislating morality issues such as gay marriages, sodomy, etc, but I don't pretend that our government doesn't have the responsibility to legislate morality. Our Founding Fathers saw to start this country with laws that legislated morality.

A few years ago, The Supreme Court decide to overthrow a Texas Sodomy law on the grounds that it wasn't up to the States to "Legislate Morality".

Though I'm glad the decision went the way it did, the Court's rationale was completely false.

We have, do and will continue to legislate morality. What swings the pendulum is answering the question of "What is Moral?" in a given situation.

No, and it's not like they haven't tried.

Didn't the president pour a bunch of money into some sort of marriage program?

They try to "legislate morality" even with things like the ridiculous "abstinence programs." That's just totally ridiculous. Why not give teens information and contraception, and cut down on both STDs and pregnancies?

No, you cannot "legislate morality." That's the job of religion - not government.

it incredibly is critical that we don't enable the ignorant fundies to stress their lack of understanding into our rules, our government, and our colleges. it incredibly is fullyyt a count of time till now gay marriage reaches the final courtroom. at that factor, the Justices will legalize it for the entire u . s .. "The civil rights of none would be abridged because of the fact of religious concept or worship, nor shall any nationwide faith be standard, nor shall the entire and equivalent rights of judgment of right and incorrect be in any way, or on any pretence, infringed.'' - James Madison (unique wording of the 1st exchange; Annals of Congress 434 (June 8, 1789).)

Hell. No.

Whose version of morality would they settle on? How would you reconcile various beliefs? How would you punish the immoral? Do you have any idea how many people would be in prison?

Plus, if anyone is going to be the moral leader, it shouldn't be anyone from the U.S. government. Good lord.

It is not the job of the government to legislate morality. The government's job is to grab other nation's wealth and put it on corporations' table. Or so it seems!

The Saudi Arabian government has: the Koran is its constitution and much of its law.

Perhaps after the Religious Right get into power and make the Bible part and parcel of the Constitution, your question will be moot.
