When the Jewish people immigrated here from other countries and went into business, they brought their old ways of doing it with them. Instead of just putting price tags on items, they simply started at a price and the customer was actually the one who did the "jewing down," but it became a saying.

Because Jews like to drive and strike bargains in the market place so the merchant will start at a high price and the buyer will keep making lesser offers to "Jew them down" to what they are willing to pay and the seller makes counter offers back and forth until it's agreed upon by both parties. Many cultures practice this. At least that's my understanding of it.

Could be from Abraham's intercession concerning the destruction of Sodom. He asked the Lord if Sodom would be destroyed if there were 50 righteous. He answers, "No'. Abraham asks about 45. No. Then 40. Then 30. 20 and then 10. Only Lot, his wife(looked back and turned to stone), and daughters got out(had to) before destruction came. Some think from volcanic eruption(Hebrew: brimstone, to sulfer, smell associated with volcanoes. (paraphrased from Genesis chapter 18)
