If all you ate was fish and nothing else you would also become quite large. Kodiak bears are a subspecies of brown bear that becomes much, much larger than normal grizzly bears due in large part to the greater amount of salmon that they consume. Whales are so fat due in large part to their diets. To swim the whale need only move its large, muscular tail up and down, effortless for a blue whale, right whale, or humpback whale. With a human being swimming we must use more muscles to stay afloat than a whale does which is naturally buoyant to a degree.

Swimming is good exercise, but whales also must eat A LOT to maintain their body weight and their metabolism (up to 1/3 of their body weight each day!). Their fat (or blubber) is very important for their survival. Without it, they would not be able to keep warm and maintain their internal body temperature and they would also not be able to survive during periods when food is scarce. So being fat, for a whale, is a very good thing.

omg, this question just cracked me up so much i had to answer.
whales swim in such cold waters, and dive so deep, that they need all that blubber to keep them warm. it also aids them in floatation, balance, and for nourishment if they can't get enough food to maintain their weight. they have a huge amount of muscle too...ever seen a whale jump out of the water? that takes muscle.
i love whales, esp orcas.
btw, swimming is really good exercise. it works all the major muscle groups and is aerobic.
