Folklore has it that the Velvet Underground sold 1,000 copies of it's first album, but everyone who bought it went on to form a band. That's a stretch, of course, but not a very big stretch! The Velvet Underground was the dawn of Alternative Rock.

New York underground band of the early 70s. Lou Reed was the lead singer. The song "Sweet Jane" got some play outside of New York.
