He was the only President to take office that wasn't an elected official. Not President nor Vice President. Prior to the ratification of the 25th Amendment in 1967, there was no provision for filling a vacancy in the vice presidency. When a president died in office, the vice president succeeded him, and the vice presidency then remained vacant. The first vice president to take office under the new procedure was Gerald Ford, who was nominated by Nixon on Oct. 12, 1973, and confirmed by Congress the following Dec. 6.

It was a time when the nation needed healing. I was just out of high school and I remember. President Ford had also been a respected member of Congress for 25 years and a WW2 veteran. He was old school.

He is credited with helping the nation move past Watergate while president, that's probably his most important role in history.
He held a long political career in the House of Representive, culminating in his position as Speaker of the House. He also played on 2 national championship teams for the University of Michigan.

He wasnt but i had the honor to spend some time with him and he was indeed kind a gracious to a fault, but you could sense that if pushed he could be hard as nails! Like Reagan his death has shown how the level of presidentail gravitas has waned in recent presidents hence the grief held by the citizenry!
