Best Captian? Allan Border by far. "AB" had a much more rubbish team to start with, which he molded into a ruthless tough as nails outfit, which took it to the West Indies at the height of their power, nicked the Ashes back off England in 1989 despite having the "most rubbish team ever to tour England", restrain Merv Hughes from a monster who just wanted to batter Englishmen and smash beer cans against his forehead, and turn him into a useful bowler, and convert Warne from a pie chucker (the one's he wasn't eating) into a clever bowler.
Mark Taylor inheireted Border's baby, and although he was an incredibly astute captain tactically, the players already had found a new belief that they could be the best in the world.
Steve Waugh inheireted a team which was already on the brink of true greatness. In my opinion he wasn't even as a good a captain as Taylor or Border to be honest, but he was so mentally aggressive and tenacious he would psych opponents into losing. Awesome player, and presided over Australia's second "golden age".
Ponting is not a great captain, but he is a truely great player. He leads by example, ie going out and just belting truck loads of runs. Then when the truck has off-loaded the first load, he goes back and refills it! He is not as astute as any of his predeccessors in my opinion, but he is learning, and this Ashes has shown he learnt his lesson from 2005. I think he will be remembered as an awesome captain because the team is still so dominant, but he had the work of his predeccessors to thank for having those players. His true test will come over the next two years when he has to shape a new side with at least three or four inexperienced players likely to come into the squad.

I think Ponting is the best batsman among those 4. It is difficult to say who the best captain is................Border captained during a difficult period and laid the foundation for their current success......Taylor built on that. Waugh and Ponting had a easier task..........captaining a set of champions. We would be able to see Ponting's true abilities from now on I guess.......It would be a challenging task to maintain the same standards without Warne, McGrath, Martin and Langer...............
