I would have to say final fantasy 7.
because out of all of them... it has the best story line.

I remember when Final Fantasy VII came out, some said it wasn't as good as IV and VI, eventhough it was partially based on them. V was kinda a special orphan though, despite its special contribution is the jobs system.
I guess it took a decade and a dozen or so of Final Fantasy games to make VII a classic and to think that it wasn't really that bad.
I hope they kick out the whole Advent Children storyline and really start where VII ended, 500 years after the events in VII. The Materia system was quite good and it should be reused.
The whole Advent Children storyline should have been applied to VIII, but it got applied to VII because VII is more popular.

I highly recommend 4 and 6. They are both SNES games, so the graphics are a little dated, but they have wonderful characters and storylines. FF4 has a remake on the DS with greatly improved graphics, 6 is available on the PS1 and the GBA. Like the other reviewer, I think you would also enjoy Chrono Trigger, available on the SNES, PS1, and DS. Chrono Cross was just okay in my opinion. I also liked Final Fantasy 9, which is a more traditional Final Fantasy. I also enjoyed 13.

I think 7 is still the best as far as story is concerned- hopefully they will remake it with better graphics and gameplay. Sephiraoth was definately the coolest villain. 8 and 9 were both disappointing, so was 11 (FF Online). 10 and 12 for the PS2 were both great games (I would even put 12 on par with 7). FF13 for PS3 looks promising thus far. For nostalgic purposes I would recommend playing 4 & 6 (called Final Fantasy 2 & 3 originally in the United States- originally released for Super Nintendo)

Personal favorite - Final Fantasy 7 is the best in my opinion just because I love love love Cloud & I have a thing for the bad *** Sephiroth...
Game play - 12 because it's just fun, although the story suck *** but the fighting system in 12 is awsome & quite addicting, that's the only part that still keep me playing 12; 8 comes in 2nd
Storyline & Graphic - 10 & 10 part 2
* 9 is pretty awsome too but it takes a while to get use to the characters for the fact that they're not human...

Well i cant pick one as my fav. but i would have to say that...
FFIV - Great game for its plot to the point and a little tricky but a fun play through with lots and lots and lots of GREAT music. After playing the game a couple of times i found the sheet music to it and started learned some are hard to play but fun. The music is perfect for the game to it really emphasizes the moods.
FFVI - I havent quite finished this one again good music, but the plot was really good. They made it so that you play everyone, in all there diffrent paths. Lots of really good ideas were put into this one and takes a lot of thinking the first time through.
FFVII - One of the best, It had an awesome plot. Kept you thinking the whole way through and unbelievable cinemas in that game, for its time of course, hehe :D.
as for the rest they were ok 8 kept it together 9 i didn't even bother i heard some really weird things about that one, 10 was way to movie like you watch to much and played to little. 11 Was one of the worst MMORPG's i have ever played but a lot of people seem to like it so, eh, as for 12 i didn't even know it was out.

FFVI (or FFIII on the SNES) is the best in my opinion. You got a light world and a dark world, so it's like 2 games in one. Plus, the opera scene with Celeste is a musical masterpiece. Who would have thought that the SNES was capable of producing such sound. Kafka, the final boss, was just awesome. He had 3 stages that you need to beat, and if one member dies, another member can come in and take his/her place.
